The Scene=Day 1-The Navy Yard

The Red Signs surge onto the Screen -Breaking News-screams across the left side-sirens are blaring... black robot looking trucks roll up on the scene.Ambulances arrive from every direction. Police are running with side arms drawn. Crowds run out of a building. Witnesses describe the horror-News people, commentators, experts suddenly emerge from nowhere as if they are continually waiting in the wings ready to play their part.

News reporters caution that all the facts are not in. Hostage negotiators give an assumed blow by blow description of a scene they have not as yet played any part in. Mental health experts swap places with the hostage negotiators to explain, in excruciating detail, what must be happening  to the panicked crowd and what is in the mind of the perpetrator . Retired FBI agents tell us what happens next. Retired police chiefs verse us in the usual procedure and what we can expect.

Across the bottom of the screen words continually notify us that there are 3 wounded and no fatalities. Suddenly that changes to 3 wounded and 4 dead. Minutes later the 4 changes to 6 and then to 8 until it finally settles in at a comfortable 12 dead and stays there. It might as well have read an even dozen although that might have seemed tacky given the circumstances.

Enter a police spokesman who tells us they really don't know anything yet as they plead for time and patience facing hungry reporters who must be fed moment to moment.

Enter a spokeswoman from the hospital that tells us that a fourth of a dozen are in the operating room and are doing well and will survive. Thank goodness they will not have to change the even dozen that continues to roll across the screen to a higher but odd number at least not yet.

The President gives comfort and orders the flags to fly at half-staff- again.

A baseball game is cancelled...

The Scene Day 2-The Congress of the United States of America

The House of Representatives convenes and starts the day with a moment of silence again for the Bakers dozen now scrolling at the bottom to the screen. The Senate convenes and starts the day with a moment of silence-again.

Fade to Black and cut...

We have seen this scene so many times. Six Times in the last five years. In Arizona the bottom of the screen sculled the number 6 plus Gabby Gifford’s. In Colorado, it scrolled the number 12 plus 58 wounded .8 were scrolling as they got their hair done at a salon in Seal Beach , CA.At Fort Hood, it was a baker’s dozen-13. In Newtown it scrolled the number 20 plus 6 as if they could not add the numbers as they continued to climb. On Monday, the numbers seem to stop at an even dozen until all of a sudden the 12 changed to 13.

Each time a number scrolls across the bottom of the screen...like a car wreck-people crane their necks to see when the number will go higher.

The President speaks of the tragedy and orders the flags to half-staff. The Congress holds their moment of silence and then remains forever silent.

Scene 3-A Chicago Basketball Court

13 People shot.The US has broken its record now. Two Mass shootings in 4 days. Bring on the hostage negotiators, the psychiatrists, the police, the ambulance, the police spokesperson, the hospital spokesperson and the rest of the usual pundits. They barely had time to go home and take a shower and change before they were called back by the makeup department to play their scenes again.

This scene will have dozens of more takes because the ending never comes out right. The director asks the producer- how high we shall let the scrolling number go to. Is 33 enough? Maybe 51 would make a better ending. If the scrolling screen can take it maybe we can project hundreds onto it.

33,000 people every year in the US have their lives taken by a gun. Their numbers do not scroll across anyone's screen because the director cannot cope with that many  in any one scene. There are not enough extras to play their parts.

The Shooter is dead.

 So are 33,000 more.
